Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout)

A lockout is a physical method of keeping equipment from being set in motion and endangering workers. In lockouts, a disconnect switch, circuit breaker, valve, or other energy-isolating mechanism is put in the safe or off position; a device is often placed over the energy - isolating mechanism to hold it in the safe position; and a lock is attached so that the equipment can't be energized. In a tagout, the energy-isolating device is placed in the safe position and a written warning is attached to it.

Contractors must use lockout and/or tagout procedures when working on equipment, devices, or systems that may release energy. Contractors shall supply all lockout/tagout devices and tags to be used by their employees.

If University and contracted personnel have overlapping needs for LO/TO affecting the same item(s) of equipment at the same time, both parties must coordinate and comply with each others lockout/tagout devices and procedures.
