It’s the start of the semester, which means the University is preparing to welcome students for the new year! As you start packing, consider our tips below to have a green move-in.

Pack Only What You Need

Many college supplies lists include items that you may not need once you arrive on campus, so if you see something you don't think you will use, consider not bringing it. Coordinate with your roommates to make sure you don't bring duplicate items, such as a microfridge or television. Residence Life recommends students bring items that can fit into a maximum of three 40 gallon totes, two large suitcases, and one micro-fridge, television, and backpack.

Pack in Reusable Containers and Embrace Multi-Use Items

To minimize the amount of waste generated during move in, pack for school in reusable containers such as sturdy suitcases, bookbags, and duffle bags, rather than plastic bags. Protect fragile items with items you're already packing. Use towels, clothing, or bedding rather than disposable bubble wrap and packing popcorn.

Move, then Shop

Wait to purchase non-essential items until after you move in if possible. Purchasing after move in will help you better understand what you really need and help you coordinate with your roommates to avoid duplicate items. It will also make the move easier by needing to pack and transport fewer items.

Purchase Second Hand

Prioritize purchasing items second hand when possible. Check out Project Move In during the fall semester for free items like clothes hangers, storage containers, lamps, laundry bins, and room decorations, all donated when students moved out during the spring semester.

Pack Eco-Friendly Supplies

When deciding what to bring to campus, prioritize eco-friendly and reusable items. Bring a reusable water bottle (there are refill stations across campus), coffee mug, reusable plates and silverware, a laundry drying rack to avoid using the clothes dryer, shampoo and soap bars rather than plastic packaged toiletries, plant-based laundry detergent and cleaning supplies, LED lights, and ENERGY STAR certified electronics.

Avoid paper plates, plastic utensils, extra paper products and office supplies, pod-based coffee systems, and bottled water.

Recycle Properly

After you unpack, check out our Recycling & Compost guide to learn how to dispose of any waste properly. If you plan to use cardboard to store some of your items, flatten the cardboard boxes after use and place them in the proper recycling areas. This will help our Facilities team manage recyclables during move-in.
