The following principles guide the Space Management program.
The Space Management Program encourages stewardship goals that appropriately maximize utilization of physical assets and advance best practices in functionality and maintainability.
The University’s space inventory is a valuable resource for academic and workplace planning and design. However, its usefulness is dependent on the accuracy of data and the timeliness of updates. Continued stewardship of data and maintenance of the space inventory is an ongoing, collaborative effort that is fully supported by University Leadership as a high priority for the campus.
Spaces should be utilized in the most efficient manner to best serve immediate programmatic and long-term strategic goals. Space is a resource to be allocated in a manner which best advances the University’s Mission and Strategic Plan and aligns with the Campus Master Plan. Space may be reassigned based on objective criteria and justifiable needs. Space assignments may and will change to achieve optimal utilization and respond to current and emerging requirements.
Space needs will be evaluated in the context of qualitative and quantitative analysis, current utilization, and functional considerations. Space guidelines and standards will be used to provide guidance.
Responsibility for assignment and reassignment of space will generally follow departmental organizational hierarchies. While space assignments are subject to change based on the authority of the Provost and the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, the ability to allocate is generally delegated to each of the Deans and Vice Presidents for their respective divisions, departments, and institutes, centers, and other programs. This is contingent on availability of space as determined by the University’s space guidelines and standards.
Alterations to space must be code compliant and adequately address occupancy loads, egress, and accessibility.
